Abstract

This chapter, after highlighting the conceptual problematics involved in bringing domesticated animals such as bovines into the radar of extinction, asserts the threat of breed extinction calls forth an open-ended relook at the aesthetics of companionships between humans and bovines. The worldly phenomenon and discourse of extinction threat is not just an empirical, ethical, biological, social, or political affair, but an aesthetic encounter happening inside and outside the parties involved in companionships. This chapter explicates short circuits in human-bovine companionships â for example, instead of herder-herd bovine companionship, the herder - the milch cow - the herd bovine companionship is explored in this chapter. By bringing in the personae of milch cow, which exist outside the companionships of herder-herd bovine, this chapter argues the necessity of approaching extinction as an aesthetic of being haunted by a third party existing outside the given companionship. This chapter portrays how herders, sport bull groomers and conservationists experience the threat of breed extinction. Once again, this chapter implicates the force of herd, virility, grace, and omni-pregnancy in the aesthetics of hauntings and biographies of companionships.
