Abstract

While dying and upon death, how a bovine forge and sever companionship with humans is discussed in this chapter through four interrelated questions: Can an animal die? What is it to be-with a dying bovine? How to mourn a dead bovine? Where does it (death) happen? In a similar spirit to the previous chapters, which dealt with the issue of interactive dynamics of bovine’s birth, pain, and play – inside and outside the sporting performances – in making and unmaking human-bovine companionships, this chapter deals with the issue of interactive dynamics of bovine’s death in making and unmaking human - bovine companionships. This chapter affirms death is an important event that is not passive and submissive to life, rather it is vital to understand the lives lived in companionships. This chapter, in a pre-climatic manner, writes a eulogy for the key companionship forces of the herd, the virility, the grace, and the omni-pregnancy, in the event of death; however, they would be resurrected as part of the forthcoming chapters on extinction and mundanity.
