Abstract

In pursuit of the aim to firmly establish the Evangelist within his broader Second Temple literary setting, Chapter 2 works through the specific Scriptures tied to the composite intertextuality of John the Baptist. The purpose of Chapter 2 is not necessarily to introduce new information or prove that the Evangelist was fixed within the Second Temple context; previous scholarship has already done this. Rather, it is an indication of the Jewish heritage of the Evangelist in how other authors during this time wove scriptural allusions into their writings as a backdrop to the Evangelist’s own intertextual discourse that is woven into the narrative. The research here situates the historical use of Scripture in STL, coalescing with Blumhofer’s contention that the Evangelist wrote to address an “epistemological” crisis within Judaism. Examining Second Temple allusions displays the importance of the Law within this era, both in Exodus and Ezekiel, and allusions to significant Jewish figures such as Moses, Isaiah, Elijah, and the eschatological “Prophet” indicate not only the esteem for these individuals but the aspects that were prominent during this time. Chapter 2 is essential to demonstrate that the Evangelist wrote as an insider who employs a similar intertextual method when engaging scriptural allusions. The importance of this chapter also includes the need to locate the rhetoric and literary features of the Gospel within their historical context. The themes that emerge in the allusions in the characterization of John the Baptist were present within Jewish thought and resonate within this wider context. Determining this wider Jewish literary context supports the clarification of the Evangelist’s use of Jewish traditions, texts, and interpretive practice.
