Abstract

Educational leadership is fundamentally a philosophical endeavour concerned with meaning, justice, and human flourishing. In a hyperconnected era shaped by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), these values are tested by rapid technological innovation, globalised networks, and widening inequalities. This chapter frames the central argument of the book: that leadership in education must be reimagined as an ethical, relational, decolonial, and future-oriented practice that harnesses technology without abandoning education’s humanistic and democratic purposes. Drawing on classical, critical, and African philosophies, the chapter situates the need for philosophical reflection on leadership in the 4IR. It also outlines opportunities and risks of hyperconnectivity, identifies key leadership capabilities for the digital age, and provides an overview of the subsequent chapters. Collectively, the contributions demonstrate that educational leadership in the 21st century must move beyond technical management to cultivate epistemic justice, ethical responsibility, and sustainable development.
