Abstract

The scholarly work of Francesco Coniglione unfolds as a series of profound investigations into themes that, though seemingly disparate, are united by a common thread: the fundamental relationship between the individual and reality. This nexus is examined through multiple lenses â scientific and epistemological, mythical and mystical, as well as socio-political. To trace this connective strand, we might invoke the metaphor of the fabled Northwest Passage, here reimagined as the Southern Passage for reasons that will become clear. A particularly illuminating example of this intellectual trajectory is Coniglioneâs work on St. Francis of Assisi, where the concept of silence emerges as a gateway to inner revelation. Far from mere absence, silence becomes a dynamic space of contemplation, a medium through which images coalesce into understanding, and sound (or its negation) guides the seeker toward a deeper communion with reality. At its heart lies a dual aspiration: the discovery of harmony and the liberation from illusion. Here, the pursuit of external knowledge transforms into an introspective practice, a means of plumbing the depths of oneâs own interiority.
