Abstract

Severus is one of the more obscure figures in the area of second-century Platonism, but Porphyry testifies (VP 14) that he was a source of some importance for Plotinus, so that it is worthwhile assembling and analysing all that we know of his doctrines. This task has recently been enhanced by the evidence revealed in a recently-discovered work of Porphyry’s, ‘On Principles and Matter’, preserved in a Syriac translation. The present paper argues, in particular, that Severus’ views on the nature of the soul and of matter were of considerable importance for Plotinus.
