Abstract

This chapter re-evaluates Marsilio Ficino’s shifting engagement with astrological elections by moving beyond the binary of ‘for’ or ‘against’ astrology. It argues that Ficino’s Disputatio contra iudicium astrologorum (1477) should not only be read as a wholesale rejection of astrology but as a text that simultaneously articulates the specific kind of astrological agency Ficino sought to develop. While late medieval astrologers viewed elections as a means of negotiating fortune, Ficino’s critique redefined the very meaning of celestial influence and human agency. His later De vita (1489) appears to endorse electional techniques, but this continuity is ambivalent: rather than adopting traditional astrology’s concern with managing fortune, Ficino transforms elections into a method for refining sublunary substances and accommodating human spirit to celestial forces. This shift, traced through Ficino’s reinterpretation of Centiloquium 22, reveals how he strategically repurposed astrological practice, retaining its techniques while fundamentally altering their focus, agency, and end.
