Abstract

A well-used astrological tool in the Middle Ages was the set of fifty precepts composed by the early ninth-century Baghdadi astrologer, Sahl ibn Bishr. These precepts provided easy-to-memorize key statements concerning the practice of astrology. The precepts contain astrological doctrine that is relevant to all branches of astrology. Their popularity is attested by the number of translations (into Latin and Hebrew and later on into the European vernaculars) that were made. This article provides a selection of these translations (in Latin and Hebrew) and investigates the significance of their differences.
