Abstract

The chapter explores female employeesâ experiences at the Swedish-America Line (SAL) during the 1960s and 70s. Utilising interviews and written recollections, it analyses life aboard the cruise ship from labour â working conditions, job tasks, camaraderie â and leisure â parties, companionships, and sexual relationships.

Despite long hours, a vibrant social life emerged, with stewardesses forming relationships with officers that often became sexual. These relationships persisted throughout trips.

Although governed by formal hierarchy and strict rules, the ship functions as a Heterotopia â a zone where deviant behavior is tolerated â allowing analysis of the stewardessesâ departures from social norms.
