Abstract

The fifth chapter is given over to the theme of symbols, which underlie both ritual and narrative. It shows not only ‘why’ but also ‘how’ the human being is a symbolic creature open to religion, art, and dreams. It points to the link between symbol and nature, the spiritual world, and transcendence. It goes back to relationships and their symbolic mediation and shows the difference between when the symbol becomes an idol and when care is taken that it brings an openness to God, to other people and creatures, and to the whole experience of the human being with God in the world.
