Abstract

Among the puzzling aspects of Plato’s Lysis, the varied figures that are barely glimpsed in the text are particularly interesting. In this presentation, I will explore some vestiges of Antisthenes’, Aeschines’, and Aristippus’ ideas in this dialogue. I will pay special attention to the links with Aeschines’ conception of eros and philosophy, the possible discussion with Antisthenes on the role of self-sufficiency, and the connection with Aristippus’ theses on utility. From this point of view, the Lysis shows the need to transpose these perspectives to grasp the bonds between friendship, love, and philosophy. Hence, it is a window into the liveliness of exchanges and dialogues within the Socratic circle, about which Livio Rossetti has taught so much.
