Abstract

The purpose of this contribution is to delineate Gorgiasâ role in the birth and development of ancient rhetoric by analyzing the sources that provide a framework which, although not always precise, places Gorgias at the very foundation of the art. After examining the connection between Gorgias and rhetoric, the present study focuses on the sophistâs contribution to judicial rhetoric and emphasizes the need to investigate more deeply the relationship between Gorgias and the legal and political developments of his time, highlighting how it is precisely in this context that the sophist made his most significant contribution to the history of thought.
