Abstract

Chapter 7 examines the presentation of the two witnesses in Rev 11, which have been largely recognised to allude to Moses and Elijah. It argues that the portrayal of these figures in relation to their surrounding context is best understood through a recognition of the function of conflated literary analogies in the rhetoric of Revelation. The literary vignette of the witnesses, in this case, is paralleled to several others that function as multiple facets of Revelation’s depiction of the people of God. The portrayal of the witnesses further displays unmistakable literary links to the endangered churches at the beginning of the book (Rev 1–3) and the restored holy city at the end (Rev 21–22). This chapter proposes that the writer of Revelation chooses the Elijah image for the two witnesses with utmost intentionality, in order to portray the people of God in a single image as a prophetic voice, an endangered remnant, and finally a restored holy community.
