Abstract

Chapter 1 provides a review of literature relevant to the study and establishes its fundamental methodology. It describes the book’s approach to Second Temple Jewish and early Christian texts as based in a foundational recognition of the presence of literary allusion as a scribal strategy of this period. It establishes the diachronic foundation for the book based on the model of Steven McKenzie, which understands the majority of the Elijah cycle in Kings as representing a post-exilic addition to the text of the Deuteronomistic History. Finally, this chapter draws on recent work in the field of social memory to show that biblical figures were often portrayed in such a way as to represent the interests and reality of post-exilic Israelite communities. It suggests that this background provides the best foundation for the interpretation of the Elijah figure in Kings and of its subsequent reception.
