Acknowledgements
As in Volume I of this study, my thanks to the archivist-librarians at Yale University Divinity School Library—particularly to Martha Smalley, Susan Burdick, Joan Duffy and Chris Anderson—and to those in charge of ILL services at the University of Houston, which over several decades has never failed to respond to my queries. As legal restrictions on the use of archival material outside library depots tightened, Alma Gallo, the former manager of ILL services at UH, Susan Garrison, head of circulation for Rice University library, and Susan Kaufman, manager of the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research in Houston, provided a new arrangement that allowed me to examine unexplored microfilm at the Clayton Library nearest to my home in Houston. Ms. Kaufman allocated me a microfilm reader (a rarity in Houston) and provided an ideal research environment for as long as I needed.
I owe much to librarian-archivists Zamanguni Gumede, Senzosenkosi Mkhize, Mbalenhle Zulu, Judy Tate and Ayanda Mazizi for securing all but one of the photographs used in this volume. They came from four archival depots, Pietermaritzburg Archives Repository, Houghton Library (Harvard University), Killie Campbell Africana Library, and Inanda Seminary (archival and manuscript collections). Chérif Keïta, a professor at Carlton University, provided the photograph of Nokutela (née Mdima) Dube.
Kenneth Schneider again volunteered to provide the many drafts it took to finalize the maps and digitalized photo-captions. Ethan Spears formatted the Index. Norman Etherington read and commented especially on an earlier version of Chapter 6 and along with Ben Carton suggested additional sources used in this study. Chérif Keita shared with me his written and visual sources for several African and AZM missionary families. Other fellow travelers, including Peter Limb, William McCarthy and Scott Cooper, provided timely references and advice. I also benefited from the discussion forum provided by the Yale-Edinburgh Group on World Christianity and the History of Mission.
My wife, Hazel, helped construct and proofread the Index. As in Volume I, I have dedicated Volume II of this book to my wife, Hazel, to whom I owe so much.
