Abstract

This chapter revives earlier biographical approaches to Søren Kierkegaard’s thought in an innovative way by engaging with his work through the phenomenological concept of the “extra-phenomenal.” This concept is examined in the context of Kierkegaard’s personal experiences, like the loss of his parents and his failed engagement to Regine Olsen. Falque argues that disruptive events like these carry within them new life, unfolding between two ‘impossibles:’ existential collapse (being-in-crisis) and the God for whom everything is possible. This forms the basis for a rereading of Levinas’ alterity, where the Other does not so much ‘save us’ or ‘restore us to ourselves’ as present the unassimilable alterity that has marked us. The impossible thus carries the demand that this unassimilable alterity opens a new life, a new possibility. The real and the actual, understood as the impossible, are not assimilated into a transcendent term, but nevertheless transformed in relation to it. The chapter brings the treatment of the impossible and metamorphosis underpinned by the extra-phenomenal into relation with Gilles Deleuze’s metaphysics of becoming and formulation of the virtual.
