Abstract

Many French phenomenologists associated with the so-called âtheological turnâ refer to SÃ¸ren Kierkegaard as an important resource for their phenomenological projects. However, I argue that it is Jean-Luc Marion, the phenomenologist who references him the least, who is the most implicitly âKierkegaardian.â In other words, for Marion, Kierkegaardâs authorship is not just a preferential resource from which to draw, but it exerts a decisive influence on the shape of his thought. In this chapter, I identify two of Marionâs most striking influences. First, I offer a parallel analysis of the experience of revelation that Kierkegaardâs fictional author, Johannes Climacus, describes existentially in Philosophical Fragments with Marionâs more technical phenomenology of givenness. Second, I argue that Marionâs methodological parameters regarding the relationship between philosophy and theology mirror those in Philosophical Fragments. Indeed, Philosophical Fragments can help us understand why the kind of distinction Marion insists on drawing between the two is vital. Kierkegaard, for Marion, is not just a quotable thinker whose words adorn his own thought, but a guide and a companion, or, perhaps, a parent-figure.
