Abstract

The linguistic influence of Jewish communities from Arab countries that immigrated to Israel during the 20th century has attracted significant scholarly attention, particularly regarding the migrantsâ impact on Israeli Hebrew. Unlike other studies that focus on Hebrew usage among the offspring of migrants, this article investigates Hebrew usage by the migrants themselves, specifically the first generation of the Algerian Jewish community of WadâSouf, a group residing on Israelâs periphery. This study aims to provide a synchronic description of the transitional stage between the active usage of North African Arabic by the first generation and the full adoption of Israeli Hebrew by the second and third generations. By doing so, it fills a gap in research on Hebrew usage within a specific North African community and establishes a connection to the syntax of a particular Maghrebi Arabic dialect. The analysis reveals temporary linguistic phenomena that played a significant role in the emergence of Israeli Peripheral Hebrew.
