Si lâon se souvient dâun Ã©pisode pÃ©nible des Ã©carteurs de paupiÃ¨res dans Orange mÃ©canique (Kubrick, 1972), on oublie que la musique de Beethoven, dÃ©formÃ©e par des synthÃ©tiseurs, est aussi une vÃ©ritable torture pour le personnage dâAlex. Dans de nombreux films, le son est utilisÃ© pour martyriser les personnages. Le jeune hÃ©ros du Tambour (SchlÃ¶ndorff, 1979) obtient ce quâil veut grÃ¢ce Ã son cri qui brise les vitres et fait saigner les oreilles. Un rÃ©alisateur comme Gaspar NoÃ© a utilisÃ© le son pour tourmenter le public en 2002 dans le film IrrÃ©versible. Un simple bruit de pioche peut Ã©nerver Ã la fois le spectateur et les personnages (dans Les Croix de bois, R. Bernard, 1932). En sâinspirant des mÃ©thodes rÃ©elles utilisÃ©es par lâarmÃ©e amÃ©ricaine pour supplicier des prisonniers lors de la guerre en Afghanistan, Skolimowski montre comment la musique rock forte et les aboiements de chiens sont utilisÃ©s pour terroriser les prisonniers (Essential Killing, 2010). Dans Le Cri du sorcier (1978), le mÃªme rÃ©alisateur avait dÃ©jÃ testÃ© les effets dâun son dÃ©vastateur sur les oreilles dâun cobaye. On peut Ã©galement constater que lâabsence de son, le cri qui nâest pas entendu, peut Ãªtre encore plus efficace pour effrayer le public.

Abstract

Torture by Sound in Film.

If we remember painfully, in Clockwork Orange (Kubrick, 1972) the eyelid retractors, we forget that the music of Beethoven distorted by synthesizers is a real torture for the character of Alex. In many films, sound is used to torture characters. The child hero of The Drum (SchlÃ¶ndorff, 1979) gets what he wants with his scream, which breaks windows and ears. A filmmaker like Gaspard NoÃ© used sound to torture the audience in 2002 in the film IrrÃ©versible. A simple sound of a pickaxe can get on the nerves of both the viewer and the characters (in Les Croix de bois, R. Bernard, 1932). Based on the real-life way the US army tortured prisoners in the Afghan war, Skolimowski shows how loud rock music and dog barking are used to terrorise prisoners (Essential Killing, 2010). In The Shout (1978), the same director had already tested the effects of a devastating sound on the ears of a guinea pig. We can also see that the lack of sound, the scream that is not heard, can be even more effective in frightening the audience.
