Dans la prÃ©sente Ã©tude nous nous concentrons sur trois dictionnaires de franÃ§ais de la fin du XVII^e siÃ¨cleâ: Richelet (1680), FuretiÃ¨re (1690) et lâAcadÃ©mie (1694). Ces dictionnaires se caractÃ©risent par un traitement lexicographique homogÃ¨ne qui tÃ©moigne entre autres dâune vision spÃ©cifique de la torture. Nous examinons certains termes qui renvoient Ã la souffrance physique (supplice, torture, gÃªne, question, tourment) dont nous relevons les dÃ©finitions et prÃ©cisons les contextes. LâÃ©tude de la terminologie en usage sous la monarchie de Louis XIV permet de constater que les dictionnaires en question vÃ©hiculent le discours du pouvoir de lâÃ©poque et, dans cette perspective, se manifestent comme des objets idÃ©ologiques. De fait, Ã©manant de pratiques judiciaires monarchiques, les dictionnaires deviennent des instruments prÃ©cieux pour sanctionner et perpÃ©tuer lâordre public.

Abstract

The Words supplice, torture, gÃªne, question, tourment in the 17th Centuryâs Dictionaries of French Language.

In this paper, we focus on three French dictionaries from the end of the 17th century: Richelet (1680), FuretiÃ¨re (1690) and lâAcadÃ©mie (1694). These dictionaries are characterized by a homogeneous lexicographic treatment which testifies, among other things, to a specific vision of torture. We examine certain terms which refer to physical suffering (torment, torture, embarrassment, question, torment) for which we note the definitions and specify the contexts. The study of the terminology in use under the monarchy of Louis XIV allows us to see that the dictionaries in question convey the discourse of power of the time and, from this perspective, manifest themselves as ideological objects. In fact, emanating from monarchical judicial practices, dictionaries become valuable instruments for sanctioning and perpetuating public order.
