This chapter examines the contradictions in Oliver Chan's Still Human (2018), a landmark film featuring the bond between Evelyn, a domestic helper, and her paraplegic employer, Cheong-Wing. Celebrated for drawing attention to Hong Kong's marginalized migrant workers and elderly citizens, the film places visibility at the core of its creative politics. The chapter explores how this visibility is enacted in conflicting ways. On the one hand, while the evolving relationship critiques the fragmentation of both Hong Kong and Filipino families within migrant labour structures through a reinforcement of a dynamic structured by affective care. On the other hand, the film's resolution reveals the limits of visibility in that Evelynâs future remains shaped by her role as a migrant worker bound by the patronage and idealized visions of what a migrant worker is supposed to be.
