Abstract

This chapter sheds new light on two very different book projects that unfolded in Greece during the Cold War. The first originated from the United States Information Services. The second was a product of the League of Friends of “New China,” a Greek left-wing association that sought to promote the People’s Republic of China in Greece. Both projects were undertaken by a single Greek trade publisher, Fexis, during the early 1960s. The diametrically opposed publishing strategies used in these two book projects shed light on the complexity and diversity of book diplomacy during the Cold War. In particular, the nexus of politics, ideology and book translation offers a unique perspective on the Cultural Cold War strategies of the United States and the People’s Republic of China.
