The Old Palace, which bears structural similarities with Sardurburç, the oldest structure of the capital city ṬuÅ¡pa, is known by several names like Old Palace and İç Kale. We use the latter in this chapter to avoid confusion with other names seen in various publications and to establish a standard for future studies. Archaeological excavations in the area were carried out over two seasons, during which Urartian stone foundations and the mudbrick ruins have been unearthed. The discoveries reveal that both reconstruction and destruction occurred after the Urartian period. The destruction was so intense that it was impossible to define âthe area with two rooms,â which was previously interpreted as a temple, nor was it possible to determine the type of building the foundation beds of which were hewn into the rock. The objective of our investigations included defining the characteristics of the building that these foundation beds carved into the bedrock at the ground level were prepared for.
