Abstract

The Dominican linguist and polemicist Ramon MartÃ relied heavily on an Arabic work written by a Copt when he wrote On the Sect of Muhammad, deriving even many of his quotations of the Quran directly from it. Yet, by attending to his eccentric method of citing the Quran, it is possible to show that MartÃ was, nevertheless, looking up many of those same passages of the Quran in his own copy of that holy book and taking time to clarify them for his Christian readers. He may, indeed, actually have turned to Muslim exegetical works to do so. All this suggests that even the most implacable polemicist could also be a rather studious one, anxious to chase down his sources and cite them properly. This is something, I suggest, that all scholars of Mediterranean religious polemic should be on the lookout for if we want to understand this genre fully.
