Abstract

This chapter sets out my theoretical and literary definition of postmodernism, to be applied throughout the book to five of Millerâs plays. Taking in a range of texts from scholarship and more popular writing, IÂ argue that postmodernism was a reaction to the barrage of media messages in post-war America, which led to the âcrisis of representation.â Taking Jena Baudrillard and Linda Hutcheon as the key theorists, IÂ present a critical, political postmodernism in response to its critics like Christopher Norris and Fredric Jameson. IÂ then assess postmodernist literature and drama, using writers such as Thomas Pynchon, Kurt Vonnegut, Sam Shepard, and Edward Albee, to show that there was a coherent American postmodernist drama, in which some of Millerâs works should be included.
