Acknowledgements
This book is based on my Ph.D. research, which was conducted between 2018 and 2024. Before sharing it would with you, I would thus like to thank the members of my Ph.D. advisory committee, my supervisor Paul de Hert and my former colleague (and current friend) Amy Weatherburn. They gave me the academic guidance (and often emotional support) necessary to complete my research. I would also like to thank Sarah Singer, who during my research stay in London gave me very accurate feedback and allowed me to unblock my case studies, which are the backbone of this book. Thank you as well to the two remaining members of my Ph.D. jury, Kristin Henrard and Stefaan Smis, whose feedback further allowed me to improve the research.
I conducted my Ph.D. research as part of the Fundamental Rights Research Centre of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where I was lucky to benefit from a welcoming and supportive environment, which helped me progress with the research, even during the hardest moments. I thus also want to thank my former colleagues from the research group for all the encouragement, guidance and patience throughout the years when the research was conducted.
Lastly, I would like to thank my family for their unconditional love and my partner for always being there for me.
