Abstract

This chapter examines the emotional dimensions of the maqÄma genre in Nigeria, with a focus on the strong emotional attachment to al-á¸¤arÄ«rÄ«âs work exhibited by Nigerian scholars and the Arabic-educated reading public. This emotional context shapes the reception of the newly emerging indigenous maqÄma in Nigeria. The chapter delves into the ways in which emotions are manifested in the Nigerian maqÄmÄt, both as an âobject of emotionâ in themselves and as a means of portraying various forms of emotion. In Nigerian society, the maqÄma evokes spontaneous emotions such as friendship (through love) and enmity (through anger, envy, etc.). The latter part of the chapter explores the textual portrayal of emotions in Nigerian maqÄma texts and how the native Yoruba context influences the use of Arabic and the depiction of emotion.
