Abstract

This chapter provides an analysis of the maqÄma genre within the Arabic-Islamic scholarly environment of Yorubaland in Nigeria. It investigates the ways in which Yoruba scholars engage with both classical and contemporary versions of the maqÄma, examining the dissemination and evolution of the genre, as well as its influence on the literary tradition of Yoruba Nigerian society. The chapter also explores the Nigerian socio-educational structure and reading culture in relation to the production of the Nigerian maqÄmÄt. Additionally, it addresses scholarly debates, literary critiques, translatability, and their impact on the dissemination of the maqÄma.
