Abstract

This chapter presents an exploration of the socio-cultural functions of maqÄma writing, teaching, and learning within Yoruba Nigerian society. It argues that the Arabic maqÄma in Yorubaland goes beyond being a mere literary product, as it holds significant economic, social, and political significance. The maqÄma serves as a medium through which scholars assert their agency in society, and it is also utilized as a socio-political tool to establish societal relevance. This can be observed in the support given by dignitaries to the publication of maqÄma works or the organization of public events to announce their release. The chapter also examines the reception of both the writers and their works by considering the socio-economic and spiritual functions of the maqÄma.
