Abstract

Calvino’s concept of multiplicity yields rich results for a reading of Fronto’s Correspondence. The paper argues that Fronto’s and Marcus Aurelius’ letters exhibit many of the features that Calvino describes as the kind of literary multiplicity that he wants to preserve for the next millennium. The paper applies Calvino’s multiplicity to the letter genre, to textual criticism and to intertextuality.
