Zusammenfassung

This article recommends Horace’s satires as a supplement to the literary panorama from which Italo Calvino derives his central memos for literature in the third millennium. To this end, an overview of the first three satires will first show that these primarily implement Calvino’s categories of quickness and multiplicity and thus prove their effectiveness in argumentative texts. Next, the reasons for the quickness- and multiplicity-oriented poetics of Horatian satires are revealed in the education by his father, as presented in the fourth satire, which led to people on the streets of Rome being judged according to the standards of the mos maiorum and to the derivation of ethical principles from them. Finally, the sixth satire shows that Horace wanted to create the preconditions for a new ethics of the Augustan age. By conceiving a satirical poetics oriented towards quickness and multiplicity as an appropriate literary medium for this goal, Horace recommends the two categories, similarly to Calvino, as categories for future literature.
