Abstract

The places of childhood often mark the work of writers. This article focuses on the writings of South African author Zuleikha Bismillah Mayat of Indian descent (Gujarat) born and raised in Potchefstroom, an urban area of the highveld in the Transvaal region. âPotchâ, as it is known to most people living on the rural plains of north-east South Africa, was once the capital of the South African Boer Republic (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek), where ânon-Whiteâ populations were discriminated against and suffered from spatial segregation. Mayatâs childhood in ecotonal spaces, between the family minimarket and home, left its mark on her vision of South Africa as a âmixture of many races and culturesâ (Mayat, 1996). By reading her narratives, including an entire volume devoted to the lives of âthe people of Potchefstroomâ (Mayat, 1996), I will examine how, in a rich lexicon of multiple languages, Mayatâs reflections on âPotchâ convey notable details of social and spatial relations before, during and after apartheid through the unique perspective of a âforeign nativeâ long regarded as a ânative foreignerâ (Neocosmos, 2006) in her hometown.

Les lieux de lâenfance marquent bien souvent lâÅuvre des Ã©crivains. Notre article sâintÃ©resse aux Ã©crits de lâauteure sud-africaine Zuleikha Bismillah Mayat, originaire du Gujarat en Inde, nÃ©e et ayant grandi Ã Potchefstroom, une zone urbaine du highveld, dans la rÃ©gion du Transvaal. Â«âPotchâÂ», comme lâappellent la plupart des habitants des plaines rurales du nord-est de lâAfrique du Sud, Ã©tait autrefois la capitale de la RÃ©publique boer sud-africaine (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek) oÃ¹ les populations Â«ânon-blanchesâÂ» Ã©taient la cible de discriminations et souffraient de la sÃ©grÃ©gation spatiale. Ainsi, lâenfance de Mayat dans des espaces Ã©cotonales, entre la supÃ©rette familiale et sa maison, a fini par laisser une empreinte sur sa faÃ§on de voir lâAfrique du Sud comme un Â«âmÃ©lange de nombreuses races et culturesâÂ» (Mayat, 1996). Ã la lecture des rÃ©cits de Mayat, dont un volume entier consacrÃ© Ã la vie Â«âdes habitants de PotchefstroomâÂ» (Mayat, 1996), lâobjectif de notre article est dâexaminer comment, dans un riche lexique mÃªlant plusieurs langues, les rÃ©flexions de Mayat sur Â«âPotchâÂ» transmettent des dÃ©tails notables sur les relations sociales et spatiales avant, pendant et aprÃ¨s lâapartheid grÃ¢ce au point de vue unique dâune Â«âautochtone Ã©trangÃ¨reâÂ» longtemps considÃ©rÃ©e comme une Â«âÃ©trangÃ¨re autochtoneâÂ» (Neocosmos, 2006) dans sa ville natale.
