Abstract

This article considers how theoretical frameworks from the history of emotions field, particularly the concept of emotional style, could assist scholars of the ancient Near East in better understanding power in the ancient world. My case study focuses on kingship in ancient Egypt, an especially significant institution of power, and highlights one emotion that was closely associated with the pharaoh, namely rage or anger. Royal anger has been the focus of numerous analyses across time periods and cultures, and the second half of this article surveys a few of these. Such cross-cultural comparisons enable ancient Near Eastern scholars to ask different questions of their data and understand it in new ways. Indeed, this case study aims to encourage new inquiries by demonstrating the potential of engaging history of emotions research.
