This volume is the English version of the volume published in German by Schwabe Verlag as Philosophie in der islamischen Welt. Band IV: 19.–20. Jahrhundert (ed. by Anke von Kügelgen, Basel, Berlin 2021). It is divided into two sub-volumes. Sub-volume 4-1 is devoted to the Arabic-speaking world and contains the introduction to the entire volume. Sub-volume 4-2, scheduled for publication in 2025, includes philosophy in the late Ottoman Empire and Turkey, Iran and Muslim South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh), as well as the glossary and indices for the entire volume. It is part of the series Grundriss der Geschichte der Philosophie: Philosophie in der islamischen Welt, edited by Ulrich Rudolph at Schwabe Verlag, which is published in English by Brill Verlag under the title Philosophy in the Islamic World. I would like to thank Ulrich Rudolph most sincerely for his tireless efforts to ensure that the volume would be taken over by Brill Verlag, though in this case he has not served as editor. So far, Volume 1: 8th–10th Centuries and Volume 2/1: 11th–12th Centuries: Central and Eastern Regions have been published in English.
For the English version of Volume 4, as with the previous volumes, Peter Adamson, a broadly recognised and widely interested historian of philosophy with English as his mother tongue, has kindly assumed the co-editorship. He was thus responsible for editing the translation carried out by Gwendolin Goldbloom. She also adapted the transliteration and the bibliographical information to the publisher’s specifications. She deserves the greatest thanks for her extremely meticulous work and immense commitment.
The English version has been supplemented with more recent references, which is easy to recognise in a direct comparison with the German edition. For most of the contributions, additions start with the year 2021; in a few chapters that were submitted earlier, the additional material goes somewhat further back. The supplements were added by the authors of the German articles, and they of course also proofread the English translation of their contributions.
Without the funding from the publisher and the excellent co-operation with the team at Brill, above all Abdurraouf Oueslati, the English version would not have been possible. I would like to express my sincere thanks to them.
