Acknowledgments
This edited collection is an integral part of the research project Protection without Ratification? International Refugee Law beyond States Parties to the 1951 Refugee Convention (beyond), funded by the European Research Council. The genesis for the collection is two workshops held in 2023 and 2024. An exploratory workshop was held virtually in May 2023. This was followed by an in-person authors’ workshop in August 2024, where preliminary chapter drafts were presented and discussed. We wish to thank all participants at both workshops for engaging discussions. A special thanks, of course, to the contributors of this volume for sharing their knowledge, and for their enthusiasm and commitment throughout this book process.
The publication of a project such as this depends not only on the dedication of its contributing authors, but on the sustained support from a larger team. We want to thank David Cantor for paving the way for this book to see the light of day. At Brill, we also want to especially thank Lauren Danahy and Akiko Hakuno, who have provided us with unwavering support and diligently addressed all our queries throughout the process. We feel tremendously fortunate to also have been able to draw on the meticulous copyediting skills of Susannah Salle, whose professionalism and eye on detail greatly improved the outcome of this publication.
A special thanks goes to the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law at the University of Oslo. Head of Department Helene Gundhus and Head of Office Eivind Roll have followed the beyond book project with genuine enthusiasm. Additional funding to ensure that this book can be read open access has also been provided by the Department. For this we are grateful.
Finally, during the course of this book project, we have been fortunate to work alongside three outstanding research assistants. Nora Milch nourished the growth of this volume in its early stages, assisting also with the virtual workshop that was held in May 2023. Maisie Fitzmaurice supported our work ahead of the in-person authors’ workshop held in Oslo in August 2024. During and after this workshop, Hanna G. Berg offered crucial editorial support. Her sustained efforts kept this project afloat across the finish line in early 2025, coordinating with contributors, editors and copy-editors in an exemplary fashion. Hanna’s positive outlook and stamina kept us all going even on the most challenging of days.
