Abstract

This study explores the background to Chrysostomâs complex understanding of divine inspiration. It traces the development of ideas about pagan divination and how Jewish authors used these concepts to interpret prophetic inspiration. A crucial aspect is the discussion of the relationship between divine action and human freedom in the context of debates about the role of the mantic or prophetic spirit in the transmission of divine knowledge. The idea of the revelation of divine knowledge raises the question of how human beings remain active in the process. New Testament writers and Christian apologists also engaged in these debates. But Chrysostom, drawing on a long religiousâphilosophical tradition, emphasises the active role of human beings in the process of inspiration more than any previous author.
