Abstract

This chapter outlines a âDantean plotâ in the poetry and destiny of Joseph Brodsky. At its centre is an analysis of Farewell Ode (1964), a magnificent longer poem, which has been neglected by Brodskyâs readers and researchers. It is an overtly âDanteanâ poem, in which the pain of saying goodbye to a beloved turns into a prayer for the creation of some great thing that will bring immortality to âherâ and âhimâ alike. In the 24 stanzas of the Ode we see as if unfolding the finale of Danteâs Vita Nuova. Brodsky in his Farewell Ode stands at the entrance to a âdark forestâ similar to the one in which The Divine Comedy begins. In the beloved herself one can see the features of a new Beatrice: she created the poet, breathed her own fire in his life, made him closer to God. In M.B.âs later dedications we see Brodskyâs constant image â ashes âwhich knows what it means to burn to the groundâ. Viewing Farewell Ode in the series of Brodskyâs dedications to M.B. (which Brodsky himself collected in the book New Stanzas for Augusta and called this book âthe main work of his lifeâ) as a climax âtaken outâ of the general plot, we can see Brodskyâs creative path in a new light. The twentieth-century poets who proclaimed themselves to be âfollowing Danteâ (T.S. Eliot, Osip Mandelstam) had in mind the power of his images, form, thought. In Brodskyâs case, it was about following both the biographical and the creative: following the main plot of Danteâs life â the encounter with Beatrice, which makes him a great poet and a great spirit.
