Abstract

This chapter is an intertwined story of the Joseph Brodsky Literary Museum development and Valentina Polukhina’s contribution to it set against the historical background of the development and trials of Soviet and Russian literature. Long before the real possibility of creating a literary museum of Joseph Brodsky appeared, Professor Polukhina, one might say, laid the first stone in its foundation: this was primarily her support of Brodsky’s old friends – the initiators of the creation of the museum – Iakov Gordin and Mikhail Milchik. In addition, the biography of the poet compiled by her, and the recordings of her interviews with his contemporaries became a research basis even when it was still impossible to imagine a real museum. As soon as work on its creation began, the works of Valentina Polukhina became true ‘go-to’ materials for the museum staff. In 2015, in the year of the Brodsky 75th jubilee, Valentina Polukhina visited the so-called ‘Room and a Half’ – the memorial apartment in St Petersburg where Brodsky lived with his parents before he was forced to leave the Soviet Union in June 1972 and where the museum was about to be opened. Professor Polukhina welcomed its opening, gave a lot of valuable advice and decided to give her own archive and library dedicated to Brodsky to the museum. Somewhat later, but still during her lifetime, the future Museum Foundation received this invaluable gift. Valentina invited a member of the Board of the Foundation, Arina Bedrina, who visited her four times to catalogue her priceless archive to later transport it to Petersburg. Until the last days of her life, Valentina Polukhina maintained personally cordial relations with the management of the Foundation, supported their work and scientific research. She is rightfully seen as one of the founders of the museum, which, after a long and winding journey, finally opened in St Petersburg, in that same apartment that Professor Polukhina visited in 2015. More recently, as a tribute and a sign of gratitude to the scholar, an exhibition dedicated to her was opened at the Joseph Brodsky Museum on 5 July 2022.
