Abstract

The colony brazenly welcomed and protected regicides, operated its own mint that melted down English coin, flouted Parliament’s Navigation Acts beginning in the early 1660s, and as is more well-known made Edward Randolph miserable as he tried to enforce parliamentary statute in the colony—when not only colonists but colonial magistrates ruled that English law had no place in Massachusetts courts; to include several rounds of crown official reviews of the colonial law books that ultimately made their way to England’s attorneys generals who demanded phrases like “commonwealth” and “state” implying independence be stricken.
