Abstract

The chapter begins with the first decades of Massachusetts’ international trade, started to literally save the colony from penury, led Charles II to dispatch a royal commission to inspect his New England colonies in the1660’s. The real target was Massachusetts and its radical reputation for rejecting the new king’s prerogative. Indeed, the colony consistently and routinely rebuffed royal inquiries from Charles himself, whether in voluminous correspondence or actively rejecting his personal diplomacy and visitations by duly appointed crown officials.
