Abstract

The domestic novelist Augusta Jane Evans wrote one of the most important propaganda texts of the American Civil War. It was popular in both the South and, once it reached publishers, the North. It was also so effective that copies were burned by several Federal officers wherever they found them. This chapter analyses the workâs effectiveness as a propaganda tool, focusing primarily on how Evans presents the Southern rebels as patriots. By drawing secessionists and Confederates as the true heirs of the American republic, Evansâs novel acts as an effective performance that ennobles the Southern cause and acts as a forerunner to the pervasive âlost causeâ of the South.
