Abstract

The paper discusses the issue of migration and its fictional representation in “The Dollmaker” by Harriette Arnow. The central event of the novel, the move of the Nevels family from a small community in the hills of Kentucky to Detroit, is analyzed in its cultural-historical and psychological aspects, with a focus on the protagonist Gertie Nevels’s psychological reaction to her new physical and social environment and gender roles. The theoretical framework of performance studies is applied to highlight the performative dimension of the protagonist’s attempts to solve an identity crisis. Viewed within the performance paradigm, the ending of the novel demonstrates Gertie’s transformation from a displaced and traumatized individual to the performing subject who is ready to assume responsibility and deal with post-migration challenges.
