Abstract

This fifth and culminating chapter turns to the Gospel of Mark and the characterization of Jesus therein. After discussing the use of emotion language in Mark generally and presenting a brief narrative sketch of Mark, the individual miracle stories in which ÏÏÎ»Î±Î³ÏÎ½Î¯Î¶Î¿Î¼Î±Î¹ appears are examined. It is argued that through the use of this term, Mark portrays Jesus as one who is deeply affected by the pain and suffering of others and who demonstrates others-oriented service throughout the Gospel, not just in the Passion. The chapter concludes by highlighting the implications of this portrayal regarding Markâs overall characterization of Jesus and what that means for the Markan audience.
