Abstract

This fourth chapter discusses the presence of ÏÏÎ»Î±Î³ÏÎ½â language in both Greco-Roman and Jewish literature in the period leading up to the composition of Markâs Gospel. A particular focus is the development of the pertinent terms in the direction of metaphorical usage, culminating in the appearance of the verb ÏÏÎ»Î±Î³ÏÎ½Î¯Î¶Î¿Î¼Î±Î¹, which it is shown, is not used in the extant literature of a miracle worker prior to the Markan Jesus.
