This chapter outlines the process of choosing and working with a doctoral supervisor. The chapter is written from the perspective of a doctoral supervisor and provides an overview of areas to consider such as first impressions as you meet with a potential supervisor, determining if your working relationship is compatible, and offers strategies for success as you begin the adventure together. Key ideas discussed are supervisor selection, topic generation, committee determination, and successful communication. These areas all have the potential to be critical factors for the successful completion of a student’s doctoral work. This chapter will specifically outline one professor’s journey through the doctoral process from initial contact to graduation and everything in between. Lessons learned, success stories, and important factors that led to an effective relationship are shared. Through an intimate look at this process from the lens of your supervisor, the reader will have a better understanding of key steps to ensure a successful journey.
