Abstract

The May Fourth period has been described as a turning point in Chinese history. However, the May Fourth consciousness of history was a product of the universalization of the linear view of history, an empty, spiritless, and homogenous time born in the Western intellectual tradition and swept the world under the mantle of colonization during the modern period. In modern China, the new historical consciousness created a fictive break, through repression and violence, between “backward” tradition and “progressive” modernity, and such repression and violence also sifted into gender imaginations. Challenging the empty and homogeneous history is simultaneously resisting the monopoly of the capitalist logic of history and acknowledging the repression and violence of history entailed in the project of modernity. From reading Lu Xun’ literary works, this chapter examines how the writer employed gendered tropes to question the injustice embedded in the notion of linear history, and, at the same time, to restore a reenchanted history with other temporalities and other worlds.
