Abstract

Focusing on Guogu Journal, a small monthly journal published by students and young teachers at Peking University in 1919, generally regarded as having staked a position opposed to the aims of the May Fourth intellectual trend, this chapter clarifies that the movement of preserving a ânational essenceâ started from late Qing period should be regarded as efforts for rereading Confucian classics to radically transform reality in a peaceful way. In particular, they reinterpreted li (ç¦®), or ritual, as an institution established for the sake of founding political norms that should be harmonized with peopleâs innate desires, not for the sake of oppression, as the mainstream thinkers in the May Fourth New Culture Movement imagined. Through the whole examination, this chapter points out that it is important to see Confucianism as a classic point of reference for radically transforming socio-political conditions. Particularly, it examines critical arguments of li (ç¦®), or Confucian rituals, in Guogu and other discourse during late Qing and early Republican period, eventually sheds light on a hidden aspect of the May Fourth Movement which could be called the âritual revolutionâ and the ârevolutionary ritual.â
