Abstract

How does a Southeast Asian royal court, founded centuries ago in a world that was ordered in significantly different ways from that of today, establish its relevancy in the fast-changing times of the twenty-first century? This chapter attempts to provide an answer to this question by using Kraton (Palace) Yogyakarta in Java, Indonesia, as a case study. The chapter isolates and explicates some key strategic moves made by this institution over the past 70 years that have allowed it to connect today with both Javanese and other constituencies (non-Javanese Indonesians and foreigners) each of which holds quite different expectations of the institution. The kraton appears to have situated itself in two distinct narratives: a ‘living kingship narrative’ to provide for Javanese traditionalists of Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (Special Region of Yogyakarta); and a ‘cultural museum narrative’ to address the interests and expectations of Indonesian and international tourists. In addition to perpetuating culturally rich traditional ceremonies, the kraton has come to incorporate self-presentational initiatives such as palace tours and museums and the establishment of an online presence in order to have a say in how various contemporary audiences understand and relate to it. The performing arts of dance (beksan), gamelan music (karawitan) and theatre (wayang) play a significant role in how the kraton presents itself, both in situ and online, to its various contemporary constituencies.
