Abstract

Sign language communities are scattered around the world and the communities differ by nationality, culture, history, and language and yet there is one thing that binds them all in a visceral sense: the experience of being the ‘other’ and the ability to navigate social and cultural spaces as deaf people. Universally, they are experientially connected in their daily battle against audism, which is a systematic oppression, discrimination, and ignorance against Deaf people. With the universality of the Deaf experience and sign language as their treasured resource, it is appropriate to use the term diaspora to describe the dispersion of the Deaf communities around the world. With the traditional meaning of diaspora, it typically focuses on racially, ethnically, or religious homogenous groups that have the ancestral ties to their homeland from where they were dispersed either by force or by will. Even though there is no physical home for the Deaf communities and where they live defines their experiences and lives differently, their metaphysical home is Deafhood where sign languages and their experience as Deaf people runs deep.
