Abstract

Partner violence is one of the most common forms of domestic violence in the Dutch Caribbean. In the literature on domestic violence in the Dutch Caribbean context, little attention has been paid to how the islanders themselves define and perceive domestic violence. The focus of this criminological study is on perceptions of physical violence between partners among CuraÃ§aoans in the Netherlands and their views of the roles of gender and emotion regulation within it. The study is situated against the backdrop of legal developments regarding the Istanbul Convention. Critically employing the concepts of machismo and marianismo, the contribution assesses the relationship between gender and emotion regulation in partner violence and offers directions for further research and policy directions in the Dutch Caribbean context.
